Artist's Description
3-time NBA MVP, NBA Champion and Finals MVP* Nikola Jokic is famous for his unique, deliberate approach to getting buckets (not to mention his passing skills, which we'll opine on another day). His jump shot is virtually unguardable given he's 7-feet tall and his release point is both above and behind his head, and he's usually fading away from the basket. It's ironic to say he has a "jump" shot given his feet barely leave the ground when he shoots. His footwork around the rim is on the level with the best to ever do it (think Olajuwon), combining the highest order of skill that incorporates multiple spin moves, pump fakes, and the ability to finish with either hand, leaving defenders spinning on skates. This artwork depicts a collection of random Jokic finishes during his time in the NBA, including shots from around the rim and in the paint, the mid-range, and from deep.
This artwork holds a special significance for me because it's the first piece that I created in the "Finishes" series. I'm not sure why I chose Jokic as my prototype for creative inspiration (for the record, I'm a "Jordan guy"). Maybe I was watching the Nuggets play one night and was in awe of The Joker's ability to control the game like a puppet master, without the usual athletic attributes that most star players demonstrate (speed, strength, hops, handle, etc.), and I somehow wanted to capture his unique skillset in a piece of art. Well, here it is! Besides, what can I say, game recognize game ;-).
